If you want to make a breakfast shake you will need to make 2 choices:
- Make a breakfast shake or a breakfast smoothie
- Make your own or use shake mix powder
The difference between a smoothie and a shake is that a shake is usually milk based, whereas a smoothie is usually based on fruit juice (or water).
You can use either – depending on your personal tastes and preferences.
- A fruit juice based smoothie is great if you are lactose intolerant (can’t drink cows milk), would like some ‘extra’ vitamins or just enjoy the taste.
- A milk based shake, (on the other hand) will contain more calcium and protein and might make a slightly ‘thicker’ shake. Do note that (in addition to cows milk) there are also alternatives like soy or rice milk you could use.
Breakfast shakes or smoothies are ideal as a quick healthy breakfast or as part of a weight loss, weight gain sport or exercise plan.
You can make them easy or complex, very healthy or indulgent. Adding as many (or little) ingredients as you like.
3 Ways to make a Breakfast Shake or Smoothie
There are 3 main ways you can make a smoothie:
1. Use fresh ingredients and make your own
The most common way to make a smoothie is to simply ‘blend’ ingredients together, often using a blender or whisk.
Experimenting with ingredients (or left overs ) can be fun and enjoyable but don’t forget that if you are using a smoothie to lose or gain weight (improve your sport or home exercise results, etc) you will need to have exactly the right consistency and ingredients, such as the right protein levels, calories, etc.
The easiest way is to use a ready made ‘Smoothie Recipes Book’ (like the one shown right) so you can simply follow step by step instructions.
The advantage of making your own recipes (from ingredients) is that it can be cheaper, and you also know exactly what you are putting in the smoothie (for example fresh fruit, etc.)
Yes, it’s a great way to make ‘one off’ smoothies – but for a smoothie diet plan (to lose weight, boost sport results, etc.) you will need consistency.
And in particular you will probably need to make make exactly the right type of smoothie (right protein levels, calories, carbohydrate type etc.) every day. That is why a personalised smoothie diet plan is so important.
The easiest way to make a smoothie is to buy specialised ‘shake’ powder – which you can blend with milk, water or juice (and then add other items as required)
The big advantage is that good quality shakes powders contain exactly the right type of ingredients to make a great smoothie – however do note that some you can only blend with milk or water.

If you use either method above you will have great tasting smoothies and shakes.
But if you want to use smoothies to lose weight, get better exercise results, etc. then you will need to make specialised smoothies.
For example, for a ‘weight loss plan’ you will need calorie controlled meal replacement smoothies – ideally with the right level of protein. That is why we often recommend adding protein powder into smoothies.
Similarly there are specialised smoothies that provide extra calories for long distance running or cycling, smoothies containing extra oxidants to help your health, etc.
